Tuesday August 25

Today, I spent most of the day working on Next Tuesday's lesson. It will be great I am really looking forward to teaching it.

In math we went over circles, and we learned how to use our protractors to measure angles.Be sure to study circles because I will be teaching the circumference of a circle soon.

We went to the computer lab during writing today. Make sure that you are working on your pie worksheet.

In science we worked on a science experiment with celery, carnations, and raisins in colored and plain water.

I have graded your math worksheets on triangles, and all in all I was pleased. I dont understand why I had some people fail when you could use your notes. Please take advantage of using your notes. Also, please answer the questions, especially if you have a word bank.

Friday August 21

Sorry, I haven't posted in a few days. I have been working on planning my lessons. I begin teaching Mr. Ollis's Math class on Wednesday 8/26.

I just want to mention a few things for today's post.

Congratulations to Halle Hausman and Emily Cooper on their great stories. We appreciate your hard work. Everyone did a great job on their papers, but we want you to put more time and feeling into your papers. I look forward to seeing you on Monday in The Forum. Make it hard for Mr. Ollis and me to pick this next week. I challenge you!

In math today we took a quiz. Some of you need quite a bit of work on your angles and polygons. Let me tell you, that geometry only gets harder. I want to let you know that soon I will be giving you a test so be prepared. You will have a quiz coming up on Tuesday September 1st so get studying. I will begin checking math journals following math class on Friday August 28th. It is important that you have everything in your journal. I will be posting powerpoint presentations and guided notes on my website starting on Wednesday August 26th. If you miss a class make sure you are looking at these presentations and make sure that you are printing your notes. You may also ask me the day after for your notes, you will need them to study.

We began new science notes today. Make sure you look over the notes every night. Let's not repeat the same science test as last time.

Finally, a message about spelling contracts. Mr. Ollis and I were disappointed in your effort on your spelling contracts. If we graded like Mrs. Neas many of you would have missed a lot of points and some of you would have had Fs. It is important to follow directions. Please use a dictionary and a thesaurus for help! Make sure your activities are adding up to 100.

I look forward to teaching this week, I have some great lesson plans ready for math.
I will see you Monday!

Thursday August 20

Today was picture day. The day was a little chaotic. We did not change classes today. We also did not have recess at the correct time so there was no detention. Today in math we reviewed polygons. Remember that you may have a quiz tomorrow so make sure that you are studying. Also, We finished our stories in writing today. Mr. Ollis and I chose two stories out of the class to read aloud in The Forum. There were several good papers, but just remember that you still have until February to develop your style. You need to try your best because the TCAP writing test will be given in February. Mr. Ollis and I will be scoring your papers based on the TCAP rubric. Remember if you weren't chosen this time you still have the opportunity to get chosen next time. If you want to read your paper aloud, just remember I beleive that you can do it. Just try your best.

Until Tomorrow

Wednesday, August 19

Welcome back. Today I sent a letter home in your Wednesday packets. Welcome parents if you are reading this. I hope you and your child will take advantage of the blog. I am working hard, and will continue to work harder to make this blog and my companion website at a place where your student can get up to date study information.

I have recently posted yesterday's math notes on the website along with a Geometry Millionaire game. This game is a great way to study for upcoming quizzes and tests. Please be aware that there may be a quiz tomorrow or Friday. Mr. Ollis has stressed that studying math journals is as important as studying science notes.

Today we discussed polygons in math class. Tonite I will update the math page of the website at to include todays notes. We discussed what each polygon was named and the number of sides that each polygon has. The class was broken into small groups and the groups used a geoboard and a rubber band to construct the different shapes.

Today in writing we began our stories. Remember that your story is due tomorrow. We will be chosing a few of the stories that are submitted for students to read during the Forum time on Friday so make your story stand out. Remember to "show not tell." Walking around the classroom I was looking at some of your story maps and I expect that there will be many good stories.

In Science today we did not get around to our notes again. Remember your science test went home in your Wednesday packet today. You are to return the science test signed tomorrow unless you want detention. However, you may keep it for corrections if you bring a note from a parent stating this. You may leave this test in your packet and Mr. Ollis will get it from your homeroom teacher during specails time. Again it is important to get your corrections completed. If you have forgotten the procedure you may look at yesterday's blog entry for instructions.

Mr Ollis's Class Homework was as follows:
Reading: Newspaper Project
Math: Study Geometry Terms (Great Study resources on my website)
Writing: Finish your Messy Room Story it is due to tomorrow!!
Spelling: Remember your vocabulary contract is due on Friday, and you will have a test on Friday.
Science: Get your test signed and return. Also, if you have corrections get to work on them, these are due no later than Friday. If you are doing corrections make sure to have a note from a parent to avoid detention.
Social Studies: Remember you have a test on 8/26 make sure that you are studying!

Also, be reading AR in order to meet your goal. Today's book recommendation is The Secret Garden.

Until Tomorrow

Tueday August 18

Today was a good day. I worked with a small group during math. I helped them with their place value exam. Each one of them made great progress. During writing I helped the students come up with great ideas for their stories. Some of you have some really great ideas.

In writing today we received our prompt about our Messy Rooms. In this prompt you are to write 3 similes using like or as to describe your room. You are to tell where this room is located, and you are to tell who this room belongs to. You are also to provide six descriptions of this room. You do not need to start the introduction at this point. A diagram may help. You were also given a bigger story map where you better develop your ideas. This is not a hard paper. You can do this, I have faith in you.

A lot of you are asking questions and trying to get me and Mr. Ollis to give you ideas. This is your paper and you need to come up with the ideas on your own.

Tomorrow, we will start writing our stories. On Thursday we will rewrite and share our stories with a partner. Remember to Show Not Tell. On Friday you may be chosen as one of the ones who gets to read their story in the Forum. Remember don't be obvious, make your paper stand out from everybody else's. Be creative. Good Luck!!!

In Math, today we started a unit on Geometry. This is important. Geometry will follow you throughout your graduation from high school, and into any college math class you take. Geometry will definitely be on the TCAP. We discussed point, line, ray, line segment, plan, angle, vertex, right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, and a straight angle. We also studied parallel lines, intersecting lines, and perpendicular lines. Make sure that you study your math Journal it is important for tests. Also you may visit my web page at where I will be posting a game to help you study. I may also offer an additional study session after school before the test for any interested, but I will not promise this.

In Science, today we went over our tests. For those of you who made over an 80 give yourselves a pat on the back. For those of you who made below an 80 you have the chance to bring your grade up by correcting your answers. There are stipulations. 1.)You must write them on a clean sheet of notebook paper stapled to the front of your test. 2.) Answers changed on the actual test is not acceptable. 3.)The answers must be correct in order to gain back points. 4.) No one will gain points higher than an 80. 5.) All students must have their tests signed by Thursday, unless you have a note from a parent then you may return the test on Friday, otherwise you will stay in detention until the test is received back signed.
Remember it is important to correct your answers even if it just brings your grade up to a higher F. Even though it may bring it up from a 40 to a 60 that still will help you out when it comes time to average grades for report cards.

Homework that should be in your tracker....
Reading: Character Quote Sentence
Math: 20.1 Worksheet on Angles, Rays, lines
Language Arts/Writing: Finish the two story maps
Social Studies: Study for the test on 8/19
Remember to Read AR.
I am a big Harry Potter fan, anyone who hasn't read them all is missing out!!!! I also like Harriet the Spy, any book by Judy Blume, any book by Beverly Cleary, and Ella Enchanted. Those are all great choices. Happy reading.

August 17th, My First Day!

It was great to meet you all today. I hope you enjoyed the name game. I think that I will be able to remember most of your names now. I will continue to work on it, and hopefully by Friday I will be able to remember each and every one of you.

Here is a rundown of the day for anyone who missed or anyone who needs to catch up.

Today we met in the Forum as a group. In this meeting all three fifth grade classes met together and we studied Ideas for writing. We also studied how "Show not Tell" in your writing.

An Idea is the message the writer conveys, or what the writer has to say. The idea needs to be fresh and original, and unique to the writer's own personal experience. The content should contain details to support the idea.

Show don't Tell in your writing. Make the reader feel what your are feeling. Use strong detail and describe, don't just state the obvious. Here is some help for you
check out this brainpop! http://www.brainpop.com/english/writing/shownottell/

Your Prompt:
This week you will be working on a prompt imagining if you entered the messiest bedroom ever. In this prompt you will need to show not tell. You are not allowed to use the words mess or messy. You need to use similies, adjectives, and use an organizer for your thoughts.

You will also need to follow your rubric.

In science, today we worked on Daily Science. Remember that you will be receiving a grade on your science journal so make sure you are keeping up with your science journal.

Some of the grades on the Science tests were not the best. Seeing as this is the first test Mr. Ollis will probably require you to have this test signed by your parent.

Remember that you are required to get your science notes from someone if you miss a class. It is very important to study some notes every night that way you are not trying to cram the night before your exam.

Today there were no notes, but there will be new guided notes tomorrow. Be prepared!

Until Tomorrow!!

Mrs. Noe
